What injuries does sports medicine cover?
Sports medicine covers all injuries that happen during or due to sports. Any sport can lead to sports injuries, particularly those that involve running, jumping and fast pivots on your feet.

Michfoot Surgeons treats all sports injuries in the feet and ankles. Some of the most common injuries include:

  • Fractures
  • Bruises
  • Ligament injuries (sprains)
  • Muscle injuries (strains)
  • Tendon injuries (tendinitis and tendon ruptures)
  • Toenail injuriesGrowth plate injuries

Sports injuries vary widely based on how the injury happens and the specific damage within your foot or ankle. However, symptoms are often similar.

Foot and ankle sports injuries usually give you clear warning signs, such as:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration
  • Ankle giving out
  • Difficulty walking

A traumatic injury, like an ankle fracture, causes symptoms immediately. Overuse sports injuries like tendinitis may only cause pain during exercise. Whether your symptoms come from trauma or overuse, foot and ankle injuries need treatment. Without treatment, you could risk your mobility later.

Michfoot Surgeons offers a wide array of options for sports injury treatment. We use the most up-to-date solutions to enhance recovery and get patients back to normal function quickly.

Two of the most common treatment approaches for foot and ankle sports injuries are:

  • Multiwave Locked System (MLS®) Laser Therapy. MLS Laser Therapy is a cold laser treatment that features two wavelengths of laser light. The first, a continuous laser, reduces inflammation and swelling. The second, a pulsed laser, travels into deeper tissue layers to relieve pain. The laser wavelengths also work in combination to stimulate and accelerate natural healing.
  • Amniotic injections. Amniotic injections are derived from placental tissue following scheduled Cesarean births. Certain cells in amniotic tissue have extremely powerful restorative properties. They work like an internal repair center within your body, stimulating the repair of damaged tissues and producing more cells to do the same thing. Amniotic injections are all natural, with no risk of rejection.

After a sports injury, you may also need a brace, custom orthotics or activity modification to encourage a complete recovery. In the rare cases of severe damage that doesn’t improve with non-surgical strategies, Michfoot Surgeons can perform minimally invasive surgery to repair your foot or ankle.
